Vaccination coverage and surveillance

Some diseases such as polio, diphtheria and measles have been eradicated in Denmark. High vaccination coverage remains essential in order to keep these diseases out of the country. Vaccination cards are obtainable on request from Statens Serum Institut.

The number of children vaccinated under the childhood vaccination programme is monitored by Statens Serum Institut. Surveillance of diseases vaccinated against is also carried out by Statens Serum Institut.

Free vaccinations

  • For all Danish citizens under the age of 18 vaccination is given against 10 diseases under the childhood vaccination programme.
  • Free hepatitis B vaccination is offered to children and adults living with a person with chronic hepatitis B, to newborn infants whose mothers have chronic hepatitis B, to substance abusers, etc.
  • In October, November and December, free influenza vaccination is offered to people over the age of 65 and individuals with certain chronic diseases regardless of age, as well as those who have taken early retirement.
  • Subject to provisos, reimbursement is made to certain patient groups for pneumococcal vaccination and hepatitis B vaccination. It is no longer possible to apply for individual reimbursement.
