Dark clouds and the sky

Extremely stormy weather in Denmark in recent years

Denmark has in recent years experienced a number of instances of extremely stormy weather including thunder and lightning, and according to the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) the latest climate models forecast more such weather phenomena. People therefore need to know what is the most sensible way to behave in a thunderstorm.

During a thunderstorm, first we see a flash of lightning followed by a crack of thunder because light travels much faster than sound through the atmosphere. A lightning bolt is a powerful electric discharge which can occur between a cloud and the ground or the sea, or between two clouds.

Struck by lightning

People outdoors are at more risk of being struck by lightning.

A thunderstorm creates such a powerful electric field that it can charge people up with huge amounts of electrical energy.
