Climate changes and health risks

  • Heatwaves may mean a risk of dehydration due to inadequate fluid intake and, in the worst cases, heatstroke.
  • Warmer summers mean increased growth of poisonous algae and certain sea bacteria.
  • Heavy rainfalls may lead to the discharge of more health-damaging substances and micro-organisms. If rainwater and sewage are mixed due to flooding, this may present a health hazard.
  • An increase in rainfall in combination with generally wetter winters and warmer summers may lead to damage due to damp, mould and fungal growth in buildings and also, for example, an increase in the prevalence of house dust mites.

Climate change adaptation in Denmark
In March 2008 the Danish government published its Danish strategy for adaptation to a changing climate. Read the strategy in the right column of this page named related links.
